20th Century Women

Director
Mike Mills
Certificate

Running Time
118 mins

Six years on from the Oscar-winning (Best Supporting Actor – Christopher Plummer), semi-autobiographical Beginners, writer/director Mike Mills returns with a slight, unashamedly nostalgic late-’70s female-centric drama with further semi-autobiographical elements.

Annette Bening leads the cast as Dorothea – a fiftysomething matriarch who’s raising her son alone in a rambling, ramshackle Santa Barbara abode. Among those renting rooms are an aspiring photographer (Greta Gerwig) and a handyman (Billy Crudup). Fearing that she can no longer connect with her son, Dorothea solicits the help of Julie (Elle Fanning), on whom he has an unrequited crush, in raising him. Yep – it’s an insightful film about women’s lives written and directed by a man, with what’s been described as a career best performance by Bening. Go here for our full review.
