Young people invited to explore identity through new free creative project
A new free creative project is inviting young people across Bristol to create original artwork for a public exhibition this summer.
THRESHOLDS, launched by creative and digital skills education provider Boomsatsuma, is open to 15- to 18-year-olds interested in photography, film, visual art and design, or games and digital art.
Participants will attend workshops led by industry professionals, using professional-standard equipment and software to create work exploring the theme of “the strange, in-between moment of no longer being who you were, and not yet who you’ll become”.
The finished pieces will be exhibited at a public event later this summer.

The project is particularly aimed at young people who may not usually see themselves taking part in creative opportunities.
Elliot Lamb, head of engagement and development at Boomsatsuma, said: “We’re actively looking for the people who’d never normally put themselves forward. You don’t need experience, a portfolio, or even an idea to start. You need to be a bit curious to apply. The rest, we’ve got covered.”
The initiative comes as the UK’s creative industries are projected to grow by 27 per cent over the next decade, while research commissioned by the Roundhouse found 91 per cent of 18 to 30-year-olds in the South West feel they have fewer in-person opportunities to connect, be creative and build confidence than previous generations.

Lamb said the programme is designed to ensure young people’s work reaches a wider audience.
“We provide the kit, the space and the expertise – the idea, and the meaning, comes entirely from them,” he said.
“It goes out to the city and beyond, where a stranger might stop at a photograph or a film and recognise something they’ve been feeling for years.”
The workshops are free and will take place at community venues across Bristol.
Applications are open until July 17, with places limited.
