Back on screen to mark its 20th anniversary, Satoshi Kon‘s hugely influential anime was originally planned as a live-action flick. It tells the story of a 21-year-old J-Pop idol who finds herself stalked by a deranged, disapproving fan when she tries to change her squeaky-clean image by becoming an actress in a TV psycho drama, taking part in lurid rape scenes and nude photo shoots.

“Exposes the bizarre streak of paedophilia in Japanese pop culture,” remarked Empire in its original four-star review. The Watershed’s screening is part of the More Than Miyazaki Japanese anime season.
