Because of convoluted film studio politics, this nerd-delighting Marvel flick isn’t officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For the benefit of the uninitiated: Disney is the ultimate owner of all the Marvel characters apart from Spider-Man and his milieu, which is the property of Sony. And since Venom is a Spidey antagonist, Sony are using him to launch the – ho hum – Sony Marvel Universe.
Anyhoo, the character is a freelance hack who’s possessed by an alien ‘symbiote’ rotter in a Jekyll & Hyde-type deal. The good news is that Venom is being played by Tom Hardy, hot from Dunkirk. He’s no stranger to comicbook villainy having contributed that memorable, if mostly inaudible, Bane to The Dark Knight Rises. Emboldened by the success of Deadpool, Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer is also making this rather more rude and violent than standard 12A-rated comic adaptations.
