Making Pals

Date: Monday, Jul 30 2018 - Friday, Aug 3 2018
Venue: The Vestibules

“Ever wanted to learn a new skill from someone older and wiser?

Alive, the UK’s leading charity enriching the lives of older people in care, invites you to an exhibition where you’ll find out how many incredible elders live right on your doorstep.

“The exhibition is part of the charity’s Making Pals project, which connects care homes with their local communities across the Bristol, BANES, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset areas.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Making Pals helps to build long-lasting and meaningful relationships within communities and opportunities for older people to engage in their favourite pastimes.

“The project has spent a year talking to over 150 care home residents about what activities they’d like to take part in with their local community, as well as what skills they’d like to offer.

“Now at the beginning of its second year, Making Pals is launching to the public to encourage them to visit people in their local care homes to share interests, skills and cups of tea.

“The exhibition will centre around a ‘pledge box’ that encourages local people to pledge to contact a resident that they share a skill or an interest with. Beautiful photos of residents will be displayed alongside their interests, hobbies and skills. If you’d like to learn something from them or discuss a shared interest, then make a pledge.

“From farmers to jam makers, and tailors to fishermen, there’s a wealth of skills and advice out there, just waiting for a question from you. We’ve had offers from residents who would be happy to teach: cross stitch, photography, gardening, fixing car engines, knitting, embroidery, crochet, carpentry, woodwork, and more. Whatever your interests, and skills, come along and see if there’s something for you.

July 30-Aug 3, Prince Street Vestibule, City Hall, BS1 5TR: see a display of the wishes, skills and pearls of wisdom from the many residents who have been involved in the project. At the exhibition there will be the opportunity to talk to the project staff about Making Pals and the option to pledge a visit to a care home near you.
