Bristol City put up a fight against Manchester City

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Mar 1, 2023

The magic of the FA Cup came to Ashton Gate on Tuesday evening with the visit of Manchester City.

There was to be no giant-killing, but with a capacity crowd in BS3 cheering them on and in front of a live television audience on ITV, Bristol City were in no way in awe among this illustrious company.

The fifth-round match finished 3-0 to Pep Guardiola’s men with two goals from Phil Foden and one from Kevin de Bruyne.

Among the Robins, Alex Scott showed the wider football community what Bristol City fans have known for a while and could have easily added a couple more millions to his value.

Tomas Kalas said that he was “proud of the boys for the way they stuck at it tonight because it’s not easy to concentrate and play against a side like that, but for most of the game we did, and for that all the boys deserve credit”.

“There were parts of the game that we could have done better,” said City manager Nigel Pearson.

“But we gave them a game tonight. To concede so early and perform as well as we did in the rest of the first half is commendable.

“We were excellent at times and caused them problems and stretched them for long periods.

“What pleased me more than anything is that we were true to ourselves. We didn’t change our game to try and nullify them. We tried to beat them being ourselves.”
