My Bristol favourites: Zak Mensah
Zak Mensah has recently started a new role as head of transformation for Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives. This job sees him lead several teams at the council including digital, fundraising, retail, Bristol Film Office, modern records, and Bristol & Region Archaeological Services.
Here are his top-five Bristol favourites:
St Werburgh’s City Farm
“I love St Werburgh’s City Farm because I used to come as a child and whenever I visit I’m immediately transported back. I try to come as often as possible and it’s one of my favourite spots for breakfast and lunch. You wouldn’t believe it was in the middle of a city or near a train line because it’s so quiet. Well, except for the sound of goats! Because of the location you can turn a visit into a great stroll from the centre. The staff in the cafe are always very friendly and usually singing or dancing to a great selection of music. Places like this are what makes Bristol special.”
Gloucester Road
“Sweet shops, local clothes, good fish monger, expert butchers such as Daltons and cosy pubs. I’m pretty sure you can buy anything you’ll ever need along this stretch of road. Day or night this stretch of road is a hive of activity that is hiding in plain sight.”
King Street
“In the last year or so this road has probably surprised me the most at how it’s grown to be a top spot for drinks after work. Small Bar has a great beer selection and food menu. Newcomer Kongs is open late and has arcade machines, perfect for flipping beer mats alongside old favourites The Royal Navy Volunteer and The Old Duke. Best spot in summer.”
Walking the harbourside
“Despite the fact the harbour is in the heart of the city its overlooked by many talking about their favourite spots. Pop into one of the museums before taking a boat, train or crane ride, going for an extended walk or muster the energy for a cycle ride or run. Watch the sun go down aboard the Grain Barge.”
Bloom & Curll
“A bookshop that seemingly opens at odd times. But when Bloom & Curll open you’ll always get kinds of recommendations that Amazon can only dream of giving you. Plus I like donating my read books back to the owner.”
