My Bristol Favourites: Rowdy
Rowdy is one of Bristol’s most distinctive street artists, whose trademark crocodiles, cats and bats can be found across the city and further afield.
His name comes from some boisterous behaviour while a teenager, with brief spells as a postman and youth worker before becoming a full-time artist.
These are Rowdy’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Dove Street

Dove Street offers a panoramic view of Bristol’s rapidly changing skyline – photo: Martin Booth
“I’ve long been fascinated by the views stretching out towards Totterdown and beyond that are offered from this vantage point above Stokes Croft’s hustle and bustle. Dove Street in Kingsdown is nestled between tower blocks and a couple of fine drinking establishments: the Hare On The Hill and the Hillgrove. I just become transfixed by the views night or day every time I pass through. And it also leads nicely to my next choice…”
The Cube

“Alongside their screenings of arthouse and indie films, the Cube on Dove Street South also offers some of the best musical gigs in town. What’s more, it’s genuinely affordable and fiercely independent.”
The Nova Scotia

“Popular with scaffolders and tourists alike, once inside the Nova Scotia in Hotwells it feels like a proper pub. Since the recent changing of ownership, I’m also pleased to report that very little has changed. There’s a famous bridge you can look at, as well as stunning views towards the city centre when seated on their fine outdoor terrace. There are also lots of places nearby for a pleasant walk before or after mild inebriation.”
Radical Roasters

“Radical Roasters is situated on St Mark’s Road in Easton; an area which is a hotbed of activity. The cafe itself offers a real sense of community as well as roasting coffee in front of your eyes. Caffeine, cakes and friendly faces. Need I say more?”
The Deaner

Dean Lane Hardcore Funday is a popular annual event – photo: Rob Browne
“Having first visited here in 1988, I’ve witnessed a fair few incarnations of the Deaner on Dean Lane in Bedminster and did my fair share of painting here in the mid 90s. Be sure to visit the Dean Lane Hardcore Funday, a yearly event offering an array of live punk bands, skateboarding giveaways and demos that usually takes place in late August or early September.”
