My Bristol Favourites: Oshii

By Martin Booth  Friday Oct 24, 2025

Oshii is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work “challenges social narratives, shares and explores history through a decolonial lens, explores social and political issues, and evokes dialogue”.

His latest artwork, Our Common Ground, occupies 700sq m of the Centre previously occupied by the fountains.

An event celebrating the revitalisation of the Centre featuring music performances and an art activity run by Oshii is taking place from midday on October 29.

St Werburgh’s City Farm

“It’s a lovely community down at St Werburgh’s City Farm. You can spend time with your family and with the animals at the small farm. It’s a great place to hang out and the cafe does a really good Sunday roast as well.”

Vassals Park

“Vassals Park in Fishponds is a beautiful park. And it’s huge! You can drop down onto the river which then takes you to Eastville through Snuff Mills which is lovely.”

Spike Island

Spike Island is an amazing gallery with really great curators. The exhibitions they put on there are world class, with incredible artists. I think they’re really pushing boundaries in what they do.”

The Plough

For Oshii, the Plough is “at the heart of Easton” – photo: Martin Booth

The Plough is a great vibe. The doors are open late and it’s another real community where people can come together. If I’m out and I’m with friends, I’ll go down there. Just lovely people. It’s at the heart of Easton.”

The People’s Republic of Stokes Croft

A collaboration mural by Aimes Was Here, Conrico Steez, Jody and Melo Murals has recently been painted on the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft outdoor gallery on Jamaica Street – photo: Martin Booth

“There are tons of great art workshops going on at the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft, and it’s a great space for learning and activism. They do so much in terms of arts for the area; they are central to that. A lot of my own artistic practice started there. They gave me the space to start.”
