My Bristol Favourites: Melissa Story
Melissa Story is a cricketer for Gloucestershire and a commentator for Test Match Special while not doing her day job as a trainee solicitor.
She grew up in Corsham in Wiltshire before moving to Bristol for university, joining the Gloucestershire set-up in 2023, and this year being a special guest panellist for EatDrink24/7.
These are Melissa’s top-five Bristol favourites:
is needed now More than ever
Eddie’s Coffee Lounge

Eddie’s Coffee Lounge claims it is “Bristol’s only coffee shop serving freshly roasted ground coffee” – photo: Martin Booth
“The coffee is roasted every morning in-house, the interior is cosy and welcoming, but the main reason to go to Eddie’s Coffee Lounge on East Street in Bedminster is Eddie himself. He’s a local legend who treats all his customers with the same warm kindness and makes every visit a special memory.”
The Beaufort Arms

The Beaufort Arms on High Street in Clifton, just off Blackboy Hill, is a resolutely traditional pub – photo: Martin Booth
“I spent one evening in the Beaufort Arms, which felt like a dream. We played pool, listened to live folk music and made friends with every dog in the place. One of those nights that catches you off guard in the best way, and I still think about it to this day.”
Cargo Cantina

Cargo Cantina is the sister restaurant of Bravas, Gambas and Condesa – photo: Martin Booth
“When the sun’s out, the harbourside calls. After a few drinks, Cargo Cantina in Wapping Wharf is the perfect pit stop. The trout ceviche tostadas and lamb tacos are zingy, fresh and piled high. There are gluten-free options galore. Portions are generous, and the staff couldn’t be friendlier. In the words of my friend, their ‘beans go crazy’.”
Kal Dosa

The dosas are “always perfect” at Kal Dosa, says Melissa – photo: Karen Johnson
“My dad and I recently did the St Nick’s Market air raid shelter tour in town, then strolled up to Kal Dosa on Gloucester Road. The dosas are always perfect; naturally gluten free, accompanied by flavourful sambar and chutneys and an array of punchy small plates. I’d recommend the keema podi idlis and the curry leaf prawns.”
Kask

Kask on North Street currently has a colourful mural by Angie Jerez – photo: Martin Booth
“My friend and I went to Kask with a mission to find an orange wine which would bring back memories of our trip to Barcelona a few years before. The staff were incredibly helpful, teaching us a lot about their options. The relaxing décor and charming garden means it’s a wonderful spot to unwind and catch up.”
