These are Hemali’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Kings Weston House

Kings Weston House was a lifeline for Hemali during lockdown – photo by Barbara Evripidou

“This place was a lifeline during lockdown and I’ve continued to come here most weeks with my mate Delia. We pretend it’s for the dog walk but really it’s an excuse to sample the very lovely cakes in the cafe. The house itself is beautiful and always seems to be bathed in light. The grounds are a mix of parkland and woodland. I particularly love the tree-lined passage that leads to the house. It always reminds me of that moment in Pride and Prejudice when Lizzie sees Pemberley for the first time. I’ve yet to meet my Mr Darcy there but one lives in hope.”

“There are many great arts trails in Bristol but the North Bristol one is a particular fave as it’s on my home turf. In previous years I’ve been a visitor. This is its twentieth year and I have the great pleasure of being part of it and am exhibiting from my home (venue 48 on the map). All the artists live within the north Bristol area and there’s over a 100 of us!”

Henleaze Lake

“I don’t have membership but am lucky enough to have friends that do so visit on a guest pass. Like so many of us, I’ve discovered the joys of cold water swimming. The lake is beautiful and slightly other worldly with its springboard and high diving platforms surrounded by trees, ferns and lily pads. A real hidden gem in the middle of the burbs.”

Arnolfini

Hemali has “fallen in love with the Arnolfini all over again” – photo by Martin Booth

“I have fallen in love with the Arnolfini all over again after its recent exhibition of Frank Bowling’s work. So many rooms filled with his large vibrant works. I thought the cabinets displaying his materials and tools (including Ikea pastels) were a great touch.”

Papadeli

“Papadeli salad and food counter is my go to when I want a break from cooking. Personal favourites are the pepper, artichoke , ricotta frittata and any salad which has kale or fennel in it. It’s hard to leave without buying a jar of the giant butter beans, a slice of cake and some colourful pasta.”
