My Bristol Favourites: Edson Burton
Writer, historian, programme curator and performer Edson Burton is the Watershed’s new artist in residence. An immersive experience will follow the Black Afronaut explorer as he travels through space recording a science series exploring the possibility of life on other planets.
Edson will be resident at the Watershed between September and January 2017. He will be sharing his progress throughout the residency and become part of the community at the Pervasive Media Studio.
Here are Edson’s top-five Bristol favourites:
Ashton Court
“Another repository of memories salubrious and not so salubrious from the joys of riding on the miniature railway, to Ashton Court Festival, and the person killing climb up the hill. Seeing kites emblazoned across the sky with my kids and my bestest mates. Priceless.”
Stapleton Road
“The street is a soap opera filled with larger than life characters, colourful shops filled with a cornucopia of global goods. It’s meat and bread for a writer. It’s where I feel at home.”
Trinity Centre
“There are places of work which you cannot wait to escape, colleagues that engender homicidal thoughts, bosses that makes David Brent appear subtle, settings that are Dickensian. I am so fortunate to work within the Trinity Centre, a beautiful edifice steeped in history, in the heart of the most diverse communities among colleagues that genuinely amuse and support. I have grown here, been able to try out new things and been privy to the most awesome gigs including Lianne Le Havas on the second gig of her UK tour.
Victoria Park
“Picnics, football, wrestling, touch rugby, the school run, late night and early morning journeys, soul singing, Victoria Park is the site and repository of more memories than I can mention. Bordering Totterdown, Windmill Hill and Victoria Park parish, its visitors are equally eclectic.”
Watershed
“The Watershed is an oasis in this happening but fractured city. It is here that I come to work, drink – too much – socialise and I am guaranteed to bump into a friend, or colleague. For me tis where plots are hatched, friendships are formed, where plays are completed and where I escape into film.”
