VE Day beacon to be lit on top of M Shed
Bristol has been celebrating 70 years since the end of the war in Europe. A two-minute silence was observed at 3pm on Thursday to mark the moment when Winston Churchill formally announced the end of the six-year war.
On Thursday evening, the city will join the rest of the nation in lighting ceremonial VE Day beacons. Bristol’s beacon will be lit by Lord Mayor Alastair Watson on top of the M Shed at 9.30pm. It forms part of a chain of more than 100 beacons spanning across the UK.
M Shed will open its doors from 7.30pm and invites the public to learn more about the role Bristol played in the Second World War through galleries and displays, before local production company Ministry of Entertainment perform their play Doodlebugs and Bogeymen at 8pm. The play is a dramatisation of true stories taken from the war and performed with songs and music from the era.
