Travellers set up camp on the Downs

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Aug 2, 2016

Travellers have parked caravans on the Downs, leading to the council warning they are trespassing and must leave.

“The council holds you liable for the costs of any damage,” says a letter taped to a tree near Ladies Mile from director of housing Nick Hooper.

The new site comes after a group of travellers left a playing field in Lockleaze last week. Another group also moved onto a park near Horfield Leisure Centre.

A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “The traveller sites officer visited the group yesterday [Monday, August 1] and completed a welfare assessment. They are new to Bristol and are not part of the group that was removed from Horfield Leisure Centre over the weekend.

“The travellers have been offered access to the transit site but this was turned down. Paperwork has been sent to our legal team to apply for a possession order to recover the site from the travellers as swiftly as possible.”
