SS Great Britain announces new chief exec

By Daniel Garrod  Wednesday May 22, 2024

Andrew Edwards has been named as the new chief executive at the SS Great Britain, saying that he is “delighted” to be joining “at such an exciting time”.

Edwards will arrive in June at a time when the organisation remains committed to hugely ambitious plans which would see them expand into the Albion Dockyard where a replica of the paddle steamer Great Western would be built.

It follows the abrupt departure of former chief exec Andrew Tanner in September, with Edwards taking over from interim co-CEOs Angela Spreadbury and Phil Smith.

Edwards was previously chief exec at Sussex Archaeological Society, and has previously worked at St Paul’s Cathedral, the National Churches Trust and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He said: “I am delighted to be joining the SS Great Britain Trust at such an exciting time. Joining a strong team with ambitious plans, we will realise the potential of the Albion Dockyard Project which brings wide-ranging benefits to the West of England region and beyond.

“I look forward to building on the successful programming and museum experiences which delight and inspire visitors at one of the leading visitor attractions in the South West.”

SS Great Britain chair of trustees, Matthew Jones, added: “The board of trustees of the SS Great Britain Trust are delighted to announce the appointment of Andrew Edwards as chief executive.

“His exceptional leadership skills and deep understanding of the heritage sector make him the ideal leader for the charity.

“I would like to thank the National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting the development phase of the Albion project.

“The next phase will benefit from Andrew’s visionary and strategic expertise as we move to fundraising and delivering of a major capital project for the city and region.”
