Southville and Bedminster RPZ dates switched

By Louis Emanuel  Monday Aug 10, 2015

The start date for Southville’s residents’ parking zone (RPZ) has been put back, while Bedminster East has been pulled forward.

The tenth and eleventh of twelve zones will now go live on October 12 and November 23.

A consultation for Spike Island, the final zone of the mayor’s flagship policy, will be begin in late August.

George Ferguson’s policy has seen RPZs, which already existed in city centre and Kingsdown, spread north to Redland in the north, Clifton Village in the west, easton in the east and now Bedminster in the south.

The scheme has caused widespread controversy and promted protests in Clifton, where a tank was driven through the village, and Montpelier and St Paul’s, where parking meters were vandalised and streets barricaded.

The Southville RPZ is now due to go live in November

Bedminster East will go live in October

Southville was planned to go live a month earlier, but has been delayed while Bedminster East has been brought forward for an earlier launch date.

The city council said the dates had been changed due to the complexity of the larger Southville zone.

The standard charge for a permit for one vehicle is £48 a year, although costs vary from £0-£72 depending on the emissions band.

A second vehicle permit costs £96, while a third costs £192.

The operating hours for Bedminster East will be Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm.

The area includes a number of three-hour pay and display parking bays near shops and businesses. Parking in these bays is free for 30 minutes or will cost £1 an hour for longer stays.

The same rules will apply in Southville, with the exception of the pay and display parking bays on North Street, which will run from Monday to Saturday from 9am-5pm.
