‘Sentimental’ stone sculpture stolen from restaurant

By Karen Johnson  Monday Sep 15, 2025

A restaurant is seeking information to locate a stone sculpture that was stolen from their premises in Redland.

Owner of Snobby’s, Nick Bethell, was surprised to find the Bath Stone sculpture that proudly stood beneath the restaurant’s exterior arch missing, when he returned from a recent wine-buying trip for their upcoming bar on Chandos Road.

In a story shared on the restaurant’s Instagram page on Saturday, Bethell shared the “sentimental value” behind the Embrace, the sculpture which he handcrafted in 2013.

Snobby’s opened on the junction of Chandos Road and Cowper Road in 2019

“Rather than naming and shaming, we’re just going straight to the police with this, as it has a huge amount of sentimental value, having chiselled away at the block of Bath stone myself for weeks to make it back in 2013”, Bethell wrote in the story shared on Saturday.

He continued: “It was my first ever stone sculpture and so really means a lot. It also just fitted so well in its nook above the door and has been witness to many happy memories on our terrace over the last five years.”

Bethell, who was away when the sculpture was stolen, is now trying to pin down the day of the theft.

In subsequent stories, Bethell appealed to recent visitors to the restaurant to share any pictures that might have captured the sculpture in the background.

Snobby’s, which opened on the junction of Chandos Road and Cowper Road in 2019, are currently preparing to open a wine bar just a few doors down from their restaurant in what was previously Picaro Tapas Bar.
