Riverside pub flooded after deluge of heavy rainfall

By Betty Woolerton  Monday Jan 16, 2023

A riverside pub has become submerged under water after heavy rainfall across Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

The Old Lock and Weir was hit with a deluge of water at the weekend after the River Avon burst its banks.

The Hanham Mills pub was among several sites to be affected close to Bristol as heavy rain battered the area.

A spokesperson for the pub said: “Thankfully the river had chance to drop before the next bout of heavy rain came in.”

They added: “The weather forecast is looking a lot brighter for the next few days.

“We’re hoping the height of the water level inside has peaked.

“It shouldn’t take us long to turn it around and open our doors once the river has returned to a safe level.”

The close comes after days of heavy rain in the region, with a number of flood alerts put in place from the Met Office.

It was estimated that the River Avon was at least ten feet above normal levels – a height that has not been seen for decades.
