Outpouring of support for ‘heroic’ mum killed in explosion

By Betty Woolerton  Monday May 11, 2026

A fundraiser to raise money for the family of the “heroic” mother who saved the life of her child who was “her entire world” has raised more than £17,000.

Joanne Shaw is believed to have been killed by her ex-partner Ryan Kelly, who also died in the blast, when he broken in to her home in Frenchay and detonated an explosive device.

Her family have described her actions as “nothing short of heroic” after she saved her child by sending them outside “in the face of unimaginable fear”.

Now her best friend, Josie Quinn, has launched a crowdfunder to go towards the funeral, to support Shaw’s family and to help her child “adjust and find stability in the months ahead”.

Writing on the fundrasier, Quinn said: “It is with broken hearts that we share the devastating loss of our beautiful friend Joanne Shaw.

“Jo was one of the most caring and selfless people anyone could have known.

“She always put others before herself and brought light, warmth and kindness to everyone around her.

“Her child was her entire world. Anyone who knew Jo knew she would have done anything to protect them.

“No child should ever have to experience such a loss.

“Their world has been turned upside down, losing the person who loved them unconditionally, who made them feel safe, and who was always there for them.

“Tragically, alongside this loss, Jo’s family have also lost their home, leaving them without the place where they felt safe and secure.”

The friend added: “Right now, (the family) need kindness, compassion, and support.

“We cannot change what has happened, but we can come together to show them they are not alone.

“Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference.

“If you are unable to donate, please share this page and help us reach other who may be able to help.”
