New mental health support for new mothers
A £1.3 million specialist mental health service will soon be available for new and expectant mothers in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
Every year in the Bristol area alone, as many as 400 new mothers and mothers-to-be go on to develop serious mental health problems affecting not only them, but also their families and children.
This newly funded service will train doctors to spot signs of women at risk as early as possible so they can provide information, support and care.
is needed now More than ever
The announcement comes nearly two years since Charlotte Bevan, from Bristol, took her and her four-day-old baby’s life after she stopped taking her medication following a lengthy struggle with mental health issues.
The initiative is part of a nationwide NHS investment which, along with international campaigns like World Mental Health Day, help raise awareness and provide support to people with mental health issues.
