Lewis Ball’s family pay tribute to people of Bristol

By Jess Connett  Thursday Mar 9, 2017

The family of 26-year-old Lewis Ball, whose body was found in the Floating Harbour after several weeks of searching and a high-profile appeal, have spoken publicly about their loss for the first time.

In a written statement, they described Lewis’ death as leaving a “gaping hole which can never be filled”.

They thanked the people of Bristol “for doing everything they could to help us find Lewis”. His body was found three weeks after he was last seen on dashboard camera footage walking past Mud Dock after leaving the Thekla in the early hours of Sunday, February 5.

The statement continued: “He was only just starting out in his adult life and had moved to Bristol a year ago as he saw it as a vibrant city which reflected his personality.

“Lewis was someone who was funny, caring and very creative. He was hoping that the city of Bristol would allow him to work toward achieving some of his film making ambitions.”

Lewis’ family also thanked the divers from Avon & Somerset Police, who worked hard to search Bristol’s waterways, after speculation arose that he may have fallen into the docks.

Despite the family’s grief, the final words of the statement acknowledge the home that Lewis found here, though his time in this city was brief: “Bristol is a city full of caring people who have showed us great kindness and for that we are extremely grateful.”
