Jail sentence for Bristol Airport bomb threat
A man who sent a bomb hoax to Bristol Airport, causing major disruption, has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Robert Boyd-Stevenson, of Headford Road, Knowle West, topped up a phone at his local Spar before sending a series of text messages containing security threats to a phone linked with the airport on August 29 last year.
The security threat level was raised, but the airport did not close as contingency plans were followed.
Boyd-Stevenson pleaded guilty at Bristol Crown Court which heard he was captured on CCTV topping up a phone at Spar at 5.39pm and in a public area at the airport at about 6pm.
Simon Broad, investigating officer for Avon and Somerset police, said: “Robert Boyd-Stevenson intended to cause disruption to staff and passengers at Bristol Airport, as well as the emergency services, through his reckless actions.
“The airport did not close and well-rehearsed contingency plans were put in place causing minimal disruption to passengers
“Through our enquiries, Boyd-Stevenson was swiftly arrested and interviewed. The strength of evidence against him led to him admitting the offence during his first appearance at court.
“Making a bomb hoax is an extremely serious offence and will always be treated with the utmost gravity by the police and the courts.”
