Vigil to be held for victims of terror attack

By Rachel Morris  Friday Jan 9, 2015

A vigil will be held in the centre of Bristol at 2pm on Saturday afternoon to show support for the victims of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack in Paris.

The facebook event page paraphrases a famous quote on the thoughts on French enlightenment writer Voltaire: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”  – Evelyn Beatrice Hall, The Friends of Voltaire (1906).

Attendees are encouraged to bring a pencil, “a symbol for our fallen cartoonists”, as well as signs, banners, flowers, and pens to celebrate freedom of expression.

Crowds have rallied across the world in demonstration against the terror attack on Wednesday, when masked gunmen stormed the offices of the French satirical magazine and shot dead ten staff members and two police men.

Small demonstrations have been taking place across Bristol since the attack, but hundreds are expected to attend Saturday’s vigil on the centre opposite the Hippodrome.

Organisers call for attendees symbolise their gesture with Je Suis Charlie banners, the slogan being used worldwide to show solidarity with the victims of the attack and all those effected.
