Five months of roadworks to start on Anchor Road

By Martin Booth  Sunday Jan 13, 2019

Work on building a new bus lane heading from Hotwells to the city centre on Anchor Road starts on Monday.

Expected to take at least five months to complete, the works are also due to create enhanced cycling and walking routes along one of Bristol’s busiest roads.

Bristol mayor Marvin Rees took on the cabinet portfolio for transport following the resignation in October 2018 of Mhairi Threlfall, who is now focusing on campaigning as a prospective Member of Parliament for Filton & Bradley Stoke.

Rees said: “This is one of the city’s busiest commuter routes and it’s important that this work takes place to improve bus journey time and reliability.

“It is only by offering an alternative that we will reduce congestion and air pollution. The work is part of the Better Bus Area Fund which aims to improve and increase the use of public transport in Bristol.”

The bulk of the work will be extending the inbound 24-hour bus lane along Anchor Road. Work will also be undertaken to improve crossings and junctions, and to refurbish and upgrade traffic signals.

The existing crossing at the Anchor Road/Canons Way junction will be suspended during the works.

The right-turn out of Canons Way into Anchor Road will also be suspended with all traffic directed to turn left at this junction during the works.

Traffic wanting to travel towards the city centre will be signed to the Jacob’s Wells Road roundabout where they will be able to turn and travel back along Anchor Road in the right direction.
