Fishponds residents unite to ‘save our suburb and save our skyline’
Campaigners in Fishponds are urging local residents to fight plans that could see some 2,500 new homes built across the area.
Developers say that the mixed use scheme known as Atlas Place – comprising three main sites on Goodneston Road and Filwood Road – “represents an opportunity to inject significant investment into the immediate area through the provision of high-quality development that integrates with its surroundings”.
But campaigners are concerned about the likely demolition of the “iconic” Robinsons chimneys used by peregrine falcons, the loss of tress on the Bristol & Bath Railway Path, no adequate parking provision for an increase in cars, and no current plans for additional school and health provision.
Campaigners are asking concerned residents to write to their local MP, Kerry McCarthy, and councillors for Frome Vale ward, Amal Ali and Lesley Alexander, and Hillfields ward, Craig Cheney and Ellie King.
They say that local residents’ voices “must be heard about these plans” including concerns about issues including the overshadowing of existing homes, noise and the loss of historic buildings.
Developers are also promising “an exceptional new community” at Filwood House and Verona House which would see around 120 houses and 780 flats, with 10,000 sq ft of new flexible business space in “a nature-led development with ecological enhancements”.
