Fire at derelict pub thought to be deliberate

By Seun Matiluko  Monday Jun 23, 2025

Avon Fire and Rescue Service have said the fire that broke out in a derelict pub in Fishponds on Friday is thought to have been deliberate.

Smoke and flames emerged from the derelict Farriers Arms pub on Fishponds Road at around 7.30pm on Friday night.

Built in 1872, the pub has been closed since 2010 and has remained boarded up despite a recent campaign to save it.

The pub is currently owned by Morrisons, which has a supermarket location next to the pub on Fishponds Road.

In May, a series of arsons in Fishponds – including multiple cars and a clothes bank being set on fire – were reported to the police.

In a statement, Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: “On June 20 at 7.28pm firefighters from Temple, Kingswood, Bath, Bedminster, Southmead and Hicks Gate Fire Station were called to reports of a fire in a property on Fishponds Road, Fishponds Bristol.

“Upon arrival, crews found the building well alight.

“Crews used water jets, and hose reels alongside the turn table ladder to project water onto the fire.

“Four firefighters wore breathing apparatus to control the fire from the exterior of the property.

“The gas and electricity were isolated to make sure the property was safe.

“Firefighters were then able to scale back the incident and a reinspection of the property was booked due to the nature of the incident.

“Crews worked with police to make the scene safe and manage the traffic as the road was closed until around 10 pm that evening.

“On June 21 at 5.11am firefighters from Bedminster, Kingswood and Temple Fire Stations came back to the scene as part of a re-inspection to cool down any hotspots.

“Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to check for hotspots and dampen down any possible hazards at the scene using the turntable ladder.

“The cause of the fire is thought to be deliberate.”
