Dismay as deer killed by dog in Ashton Court

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Feb 28, 2023

Dog walkers in Ashton Court have been urged to keep their pets on leads after a dog killed a deer.

Wild roe deer are among a large deer population at Ashton Court, with fallow and red deer also kept on the estate where the animals have been resident for more than 600 years.

Writing on the Friends of Ashton Court Facebook page on Thursday, Dawn Pincott said: “Sorry to post this but a sad day in Ashton Court today. Unfortunately a wild Roe deer attacked and killed by a dog. Bite marks confirmed this.

“There are lots of wild Roe deer in Ashton Court trying hard to survive with all the users.

“Please remember if you have a dog to keep it in sight at all times and if it’s likely to chase anything, please use a lead.”

Other members of the group criticised “irresponsible” dog owners.

Lee Patch added: “Why people can’t walk keeping their dogs in sight and under control is beyond me. Unfortunately the minority give the majority of us a bad name and more importantly a poor animal has lost its life unnecessarily.”
