Dog blood donors needed

By Seun Matiluko  Thursday May 15, 2025

What do a Dobermann, an English Bull Terrier and a Lurcher have in common?

They’re all dog breeds that are more likely to have rare negative blood types.

Just like humans, dogs all have different blood types.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Most have DEA 1 positive blood. A smaller proportion of dogs are DEA 1 negative.

Dobermanns, English Bull Terriers, Lurchers and a select group of other breeds are more likely to have DEA 1 negative blood than other dogs.

Some dogs which receive medical care require blood transfusions.

Pet Blood Bank UK collect blood from donor dogs across the country which is then ultimately sent out to veterinarians across the UK, as and when a dog needs a transfusion.

On May 24, Pet Blood Bank UK will be running a donation session at Bristol Vet Specialists, based just north of Bristol in Severn Beach.

They are calling for all eligible dogs to come and donate.

To be eligible, a dog must weigh more than 25kg, be between the ages of one and eight and be fit and healthy.

Only 30 per cent of eligible dogs in the UK have DEA 1 negative blood.

Pet Blood Bank UK are particularly keen for dogs from breeds more likely to have DEA 1 negative blood to come forward.

These breeds are:

  • Airedale Terrier
  • American Bulldog
  • Basset Hound
  • Bearded Collie
  • Border Collie
  • Boxer
  • Curly Coated Retriever
  • Dobermann
  • Dogue de Bordeaux
  • English Bull Terrier
  • Flat Coated Retriever
  • German Shepherd
  • Greyhound
  • Lurcher
  • Saluki
  • Old English Sheepdog
  • Weimaraner
