Design competition launched for 100 per cent affordable housing scheme

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jul 18, 2023

A new architecture competition is looking for designs for a 100 per cent affordable housing scheme.

Housing association Brighter Places have launched the contest with Bristol Housing Festival for a site on Midland Road in St Philip’s.

They are looking for “innovative and solutions-focused proposals” for a scheme “that complements the local area, is as climate smart as possible to reduce costs for residents and supports the city’s climate goals”.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!

Brigher Places homes director, Sally Gilbert, said: “As an innovative Bristol housing association committed to providing much-needed, energy efficient affordable homes, our Midland Road site is a unique opportunity to provide a site with 100 per cent affordable homes in Bristol city centre.

“This is a demanding and exciting design challenge for local architects to create a flagship scheme of low carbon, energy efficient homes that residents can afford to run and creates a sense of community and belonging.”

Bristol Housing Festival projects & policy lead, Jessie Hayden, added: “We’re delighted to work with Brighter Places to facilitate a design competition for this city centre site.

“Design competitions present a unique opportunity to invite innovative solutions into the challenges faced by the housing sector as we seek to deliver homes amid multiple crises.”
