City centre pub cancels Brexit party

By Martin Booth  Friday Jan 31, 2020

A historic Bristol pub has cancelled a Brexit party that was due to take place in its function room on Friday.

Staff at the Royal Navy Volunteer on King Street said that they were unaware of the theme of the party when it was booked, and when they found out they cancelled the booking.

Friday is ‘Brexit Day’, when the UK leaves the EU, ending 47 years of the union.

A Royal Navy Volunteer statement said: “As everyone knows, the country has been massively split over this very divisive issue. Here at the pub we encompass a broad range of views and encourage discussion, as all good pubs should.

“But we are well aware that January 31 is going to be a day of celebration for some, and a day of deep sorrow for others, and we as such, we have no interest in taking one side over another and therefore have cancelled the booking.

“We are, and remain, a pub open to all.”

Bristol24/7 understands that Friday’s party at the Royal Navy Volunteer was organised by the University of Bristol’s Conservative Association, in conjunction with the Leavers of Britain’s Bristol branch,

A Brexit party still going ahead is at the Three Lions pub on West Street in Bedminster from 8pm on Friday night.
