Bristol to Portishead line set to reopen in ‘reverse Beeching’ plan
If it continues to grow, Portishead is likely to become the largest town in the UK without a railway station.
But that ignominious distinction might never be granted as construction could start on rebuilding the line between Portishead and Bristol as early as the summer with passengers using the line by the end of 2027.
A total of £30m is expected to be ratified in March at the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority committee, which includes a contribution from North Somerset Council.
A delegation from the Bristol region recently met rail minister, lord Peter Hendy, in Westminster and now Hendy has confirmed the government will help fund the reopening of the line that was closed during the Beeching cuts of the 60s.
It will also be the first passenger rail scheme in the UK to secure a Development Consent Order to reopen a branch line.
Metro mayor Dan Norris said: “This is a massive moment for the West of England; one that generations have eagerly waited to see.
“This is great news for residents, businesses and our environment, and a truly red-letter day for our fantastic region.
“The Bristol and Portishead line was a victim of historic rail cuts but today with a Labour government and a Labour mayor, we’re delivering the latest stage of my ‘reverse Beeching’ plan.
“I’m delighted to confirm that this project is now finally steaming ahead.”

Mike Bell, leader of North Somerset Council and executive member for major projects, said that the railway line stands to be “transformative” for North Somerset and the wider area.
He said: “Together, we have risen to challenges of rising costs, understanding the value that these train services will offer to our communities.
“I’d like to thank everyone involved for their effort to date and look forward continuing our work to get the first trains up and running.”
