Mayor Election 2016 / News
Deadline looms to register to vote
The deadline to register to vote in the mayoral, council and police commissioner elections is due to pass at midnight on Monday.
When the polls open at 7am on Thursday May 5, only those whose names are on the register will be able to vote in the biggest elections in the city’s history.
Thousands of people are believed to have fallen off the electoral register in Bristol since new rules were introduced. People can register online by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
“The majority of eligible Bristol citizens have already registered to vote, only a small number remain ineligible to vote in these upcoming elections. I urge everyone who wants to have their say on May 5 to register now,” said Nicola Yates, returning officer for Bristol City Council
Those who have already registered to vote should have been sent poll cards with details of the elections.
Bristol goes to the polls on May 5 to vote for a new mayor and to elect all councillors in the first all-out council elections since rules changed.
Council ward boundaries are also changing this year, so voters are asked to make sure they are aware of where their new polling booth will be.
Registered voters who can’t go to the polling station on May 5 can apply to vote by post or by appointing a proxy to voter.
