Bristol Charity Advent Calendar 2025, day 7: Bristol After Stroke
The core ethos of Bristol After Stroke is that that there is life to be had after a stroke.
Founded in 1975, the charity works to help those who have experienced a stroke rebuild their lives.
Bristol After Stroke’s team of key workers, group leaders, counsellors and volunteers offer a combination of practical, social, emotional and psychological support to not only stroke-affected people but also their carers and loved ones.
Many of the team have personal experience of stroke and its effects.
Bristol After Stroke was set up by professor Richard Langton-Hewer, a consultant neurologist at Frenchay Hospital.
A spokesperson said: “Then, as now, it was recognised that a stroke can have very serious long-term effects both physically and emotionally.
“The people behind the new group believed that timely and mutual support, together with expert counselling and advice, could play a big part in the recovery process – enabling those who had experienced a stroke to adjust to their circumstances and improve their quality of life.”
Based in Whitchurch, the charity supports around 850 people each year with peer support groups, stroke cafes, short courses and counselling.
