One of Bristol’s oldest shops closes

By Jaime Little  Tuesday Sep 30, 2025

One of Bristol’s oldest shops in Westbury-on-Trym closes permanently on Tuesday after 160 years of trading.

WH Mogford & Son on High Street is currently run by Paul Gillam and his wife Barbara, who have been at the helm of the business for over 30 years.

The shop which announced its closure in June, was known for its extensive stock of hardware essentials, selling everything from garden tools, nuts and bolts, hoover bags, lugs and switches and to the harder-to-find oddments

A drop of footfall has been cited as the main reason for the closure of WH Mogford & Son

Changes in the industry over recent years such as, increased pricing and the rise of online shopping are some of the reason behind the much-loved shop’s closure.

“I would like to thank the many local customers who have supported us over the years” Paul said in a post on Facebook.

The shop is open until 4pm for its last day of trading.
