From superyachts to spice bags

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Jul 22, 2025

A husband and wife team who spent the last decade working on superyachts have dropped anchor in Bristol to start their own street food business.

Spice Bag Co. brings the Irish spice bag to Bristol for the first time, serving up crispy chicken and chips with stir-fried peppers and onions, mixed in a Chinese spice blend and served in a bag with a pot of curry sauce or sweet and sour sauce on the side.

Georgi Hingley was previously a superyacht chef and Andy Barnes a captain, with the pair now taking their food truck across Bristol and the South West, combining Georgi’s experience in food and service with Andy’s in operations and logistics.

“Everyone thinks we are crazy to give up traveling the world, the amazing weather and the tax-free salary to move back to the UK,” Georgi told Bristol24/7.

“But for us we missed the simple things like being able to go to an English pub, go and watch Bristol City, play sports again, and see our friends and family.

“And not forgetting being able to flush the loo without the worry of it breaking and Andy having to fix it.

“We had some amazing times and met some amazing people but we are now so excited to be back in Bristol in the house we built, and starting Spice Bag Co. in the trailer we renovated.”

Georgi and Andy, who live in Bishopston, first came across spice bags after being told about them by the first mate, Matty, in their last yacht.

“Matty, a proud Irishman, couldn’t stop talking about how much he missed spice bags from home,” said Georgi.

“We’d heard of them before but never had one, so we did our research, ate a lot of spice bags, and completely fell in love with them.

“We also realised that no one in the UK was really doing them, so we decided to change that.”

On Thursday, find Spice Bag Co. at the Wiper & True barrel store in St Werburgh’s from 5pm to 9pm.
