A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Failand Inn, Failand
It was lunchtime on a recent Wednesday afternoon and the smell of freshly fried fish filled the air on one side of the Failand Inn.
Service was quiet expect for a group of old friends.
As three plates of fish and chips arrived at their table, there was a unanimous expression of delight from the gentlemen.
The Failand Inn is nestled in the neck of the woods of North Somerset on Clevedon Road where there is a constant stream of traffic.
The pub has been a welcome sight on this road for many years and dates back to circa 1860 according to its sign.

Once you enter through the pub’s porch, you have a choice either to go left or right, depending on your plans.
The right side of the Failand Inn is smaller and cosier while the left side gives way to a long hall with several solid wooden tables to sit around.
The bar area has a traditional setting with spirits on display, a good selection beers and ciders are on offer while the interior is enhanced with lacquered beams.
But the main asset – in the summer at least – is the enclosed garden as you walk through the French doors.
Two first-time visitors each bought pints of Doom Bar and spent time in the garden leafing through a newspaper.
The countryside is never too far from the city in Bristol, with the Failand Inn welcoming weary travellers for more than 160 years.
