Portuguese festival set to honour Bristol’s links with Porto

By Bobbi Carsley  Wednesday Jun 19, 2024

Long-twinned with Porto, Bristol is celebrating its historic connection through a Portuguese festival on Sunday.

Festa de São João do Porto at the Pump House in Hotwells has been organised by Xisto Wines to promote its Port O’Bristol project which sees Portuguese wine imported to Bristol.

First made official by the Bristol-Oporto Association 40 years ago, the Anglo-Portuguese alliance spans at least 650 years.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The Festa De Sao Joao Do Porto will take place at the Pump House

Founding member of the Bristol-Oporto Association, Philip Channack, said: “It has been inspiring to see Xisto Wines sail the boats in from Porto and it’s a great idea to bring this traditional celebration alive this anniversary year.”

Traditional features of the Portuguese festival include releasing illuminated flame-propelled balloons into Porto’s summer sky with organisers in Bristol eager to replicate the vibrancy of such a spectacle.

The event on Sunday afternoon will feature a combination of specially imported wine and Portuguese food stalls.

Street artist Inkie will be painting live, with performances by Total Clusterfunk and DJs John Stapleton and James Barnett.
