New whisky bar Black Rock to open in Bristol city centre

By Martin Booth  Wednesday May 22, 2019

Whisky on tap will be available when dedicated whisky bar Black Rock opens in the city centre.

As first reported in Bristol24/7 last year, the bar is due to open on Marsh Street from the award-winning team behind the bar with the same name in London’s trendy Shoreditch.

A selection of whiskies from around the world will be organised in cabinets by flavours: smoke, sweet, fruit, spice, fragrant and balanced.

The bar itself, within the ground floor and basement of the former telephone exchange building close to Baldwin Street, will be made from a 216-year-old English oak tree.

Black Rock’s ground floor bar is due to open in July with plans to open the basement bar and private dining area later on in the year.

Black Rock has been named the UK’s best specialist bar for the past three years running

As well as bottled whisky and local beers, Black Rock will also offer a selection of whisky highballs and specially created cocktails, as well as bar food including homemade Scotch eggs, haggis sausage rolls and a selection of oysters.

Black Rock founder Thomas Aske said: “Our ambition with Black Rock has always been to make whisky more accessible to everyone, and with one of the most exciting cocktail scenes in the country we felt Bristol was absolutely the right place to expand our offering and help more people fall in love with whisky.

“Whisky often gets a reputation as being a little intimidating, so we’re hoping to be able to challenge those preconceptions and introduce both existing whisky fans and those who are brand new to it to something they haven’t tried before in a laid back, friendly atmosphere where you can just as easily drop in for a beer or two after work as you can park yourself at the bar and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of whisky.”
