Brunch restaurant to close just after a year
A brunch restaurant has announced “its incredibly difficult” decision to close, shortly a year after it opened.
Hotplate opened in June 2024, soon becoming one of three ventures from the Left Handed Giant team to take up a spot in the Carriageworks.
A stone’s throw away from its sister venues Farside and the newly opened Pizza is Lovely, Hotplate promised a blend of Scottish and Aussie dishes at its premises.
is needed now More than ever
After only one year and ten days of staying open, the brunch restaurant will close permanently after Sunday.

In a heartfelt note shared via Instagram on Thursday, the team highlighted the “tough environment” characterised by the cost-of-living crisis, unpredictable footfall and rising costs that had “hit the whole industry hard”.
The team added: “Over 2,000 restaurants closed in the UK last year alone. We’ve done everything we can to make Hotplate work, but ultimately, it hasn’t gained the traction needed to remain sustainable.
“We’re proud of what we created, and even more proud of the team who gave it their all every single day—developing the menu, showing up with energy, and bringing the space to life with warmth and care.
“If you visited Hotplate over the past year, thank you for supporting something independent and community-driven. It’s meant the world to us.”
The team clarified that the closure will not affect Farside, which remains open. Pizza is Lovely will also be up and running soon, after the necessary repairs following the crash on Sunday.
Hotplate also urged everyone to come in support of other independent venues across the city, adding that it was needed “now more than ever”.
They continued: “Every visit, every coffee, every recommendation makes a difference. Thank you again for being part of Hotplate’s story.
“We’ll be open until Sunday, June 29—pop in for one last brunch, coffee, or cocktail if you can.”
