Wise Beans

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 30, 2014

There is absolute commitment to the cause at Wise Beans cafe on Stokes Croft.

After breakfast there on Thursday morning I was even tempted to throw on the tie-dye, wrap myself in hemp and run away to join a hippy commune.

A sign on one wall is their call to arms, promising “purely natural nourishment”.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

But freshly prepared, and ethically and locally sourced food alone doesn’t set them apart.

So they’ve gone one step further. Here, all packaging is completely compostable, all the food is organic and with no artificial additives or hydrogenated fat – and they can make something suitable for you whether you’re dairy-free, gluten-free or nut-free.

There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, but also meat – the sign offering “humble thanks” to the “well treated, outdoor animals”.

Even the coffee gets in on the act, my well-made macchiato from Ethical Additions, a company dedicated to the care of the farmers growing its beans in Brazil and Kenya.

The coffee helped to wash down a delicious almond croissant – the only item on the menu with sugar.

Other breakfast options here are bacon sandwiches, vegan sausage bap, and a banana and oat smoothie; while lunch options include baguettes, flat breads, salads and soups, all with change from a fiver.

Located in a corner building at the Stokes Croft and City Road, this new cafe is simply furnished with sturdy wooden tables and benches.

There are also books to read, magazines such as The Bristol Cable to pick up and a few quirky touches such as one table being an old Gaggia coffee machine on wheels, its insides exposed with a glass table top.
