The week in jazz – June 6-12
Looks like bass player Greg Cordez is getting busy again, which must mean he’s getting somewhere with his much hinted new album. Last year’s Paper Cranes was a superb set of well-crafted pieces brought to life by a fine band also including Jake McMurchie, Nick Malcolm, Jim Blomfield and Mark Whitlam. You can see that line-up at The Fringe (Wednesday 8) and expect them to preview new material. Greg pops up again on Sunday 12 at The Alma, playing a set of unexpected standards with some musical mates.
The more elusive figure of alto sax player Dave Perry makes a very welcome appearance at the Colston Hall Foyer (Friday 10) with his long-established trio with Joe Allen (bass) and Paul Wigens (drums). Dave’s individual style has a fluent melodic quality that never wastes a note yet never seems to repeat, either, and his compositions are naggingly catchy. You can go on from there to catch the Bebop Club’s final session before their summer break with another alto sax man – Julien Alenda – and his Tribute to Kenny Garrett homage to one of his greatest influences as a player.
Finally, the Bebop’s tireless promoter Andy Hague (pictured) brings Silverado his tribute to Horace Silver, one of jazz’ greatest tunesmiths, to the Canteen (Thursday 9). Silver’s deceptively simple tunes remain an endless inspiration for improvising players and Andy’s trumpet never seems to tire of them.
