Review: Pender Street Steppers, Colston Hall Terrace

By Caragh Jones  Tuesday Aug 22, 2017

The after-work terrace session is becoming the done thing in Bristol on a Friday evening. Motion’s Lock Yard and Colston Hall both provide great spots for the early evening groovers keen to soak up the last of the sunshine, or in this case – rain and a lot of gin.

Thanks to Bristol promoters Musu, the British weather didn’t stop the heat on Colston Hall’s Terrace. Their second birthday featuring Pender Street Steppers was an after-work session not to be missed.

Canadian selectors Liam Butler and Jack Jutson are at the centre of Vancouver’s music scene. Famous for their jazz-funk and disco-house sets, the guys filled Colston Hall’s third floor with irresistible tunes like Cori Josias’ Takin’ It Straight.

This was one of the happiest, fun-fuelled duos I had seen in a while. It was great to watch and the energy that came from behind the turntables radiated on to the crowd.

Using the Terrace for this sort of event is a great use of a great space. You feel as if you’re dancing with the city as you look over the roof, or out of Colston Hall’s vast glass windows. Whilst a sold-out show, it could have been a little busier. Maybe it was constrained by the Hall’s capacity limits.

As the show ended, it was either on to the Crofter’s for the afters with another superstar booking, Hashman Deejay, or a reasonable bedtime. I’ll let you decide…

The Musu boys took the party as an opportunity to announce their next big soirée. Keeping in line with the bold, international bookings, next up is Huerco S. originally from Kansas City, Missouri. Catch him on Saturday, October 7 at The Island.

A very happy second birthday to Musu and credits to the faces behind the magic – Ben Jackson, Ryan Keady and Nick Widdop. Keep them coming!
