Slapstick’s St. George’s programme unveiled
Next January’s Slapstick festival of silent and visual comedy includes a new programme of events at St. George’s, in addition to its usual home at the Watershed and Colston Hall. It’s also been revealed that veteran Ken Dodd, who turns 88 at the weekend, will be present to conclude the festival on Jan 25. He’ll deliver an illustrated talk about his very lengthy career and receive the Aardman/Slapstick Comedy Legend Award. Doddy will become only the fourth recipient of this gong, which was previously awarded to Barry Cryer, Barry Humphries and June Whitfield.
Other highlights of the St George’s programme include Marcus Brigstocke quizzing Aardman writers about the secrets of Shaun The Sheep’s global popularity; The Goodies sharing anecdotes and footage from their award-winning TV shows; gag master Tim Vine saluting his hero, Phil Silver, AKA Sgt Bilko; and Private Pike (Ian Lavender) joining forces with his best buddy Rick Wakeman to discuss their mutual passion for Buster Keaton before introducing two of Old Stoneface’s finest Wild West comedies – The Paleface (1922) and Go West (1925), both accompanied live by the European Silent Screen Virtuoso, featuring guest player Adrian Utley of Portishead.
