Prestigious awards ceremony to celebrate underrepresented talent in Bristol film and TV

By Lola English  Friday Apr 21, 2023

In a ‘who you know’ industry where nepotism flourishes and opportunities remain unattainable for outsiders, a prestigious awards ceremony hopes to provide unrepresented talent in film and TV with a gateway to building networks.

Channel 4’s Bristol Hub and the Royal Television Society West of England (RTS West) have invited innovative off-screen talent to the 2023 RTS West of England Awards in Bristol.

The leading TV industry awards event will be hosted at Bristol Old Vic on Sunday.

Ten guests between the ages of 18-30 have been selected from Channel 4’s ‘4Skills@Bristol’ partners – a group of creative organisations from around Bristol such as the Watershed and BFI South West.

They will have the chance to meet leading figures in Bristol’s screen sector at the awards, such as the teams behind award-winning comedy thriller The Outlaws and BBC’s My Hometown: Jayde Adams, Coming Home.

Each guest will also meet some of the RTS West Committee virtually before the event, and will be supported in networking opportunities at the awards.

Sacha Mirzoeff, head of Channel 4 Bristol, said the opportunity will expand the talent pool and facilitate greater representation behind the camera in the South West.

“At Channel 4 we are highly aware of the work needed to change the make-up of  TV and film landscape,” he said.

“Several reports in the city and the surrounding areas show the need for the workforce to be made up from a wider set of backgrounds, despite a largely flourishing sector.

“Given that many of the local industry leaders will be present at the RTS West Awards, we feel it will be a great opportunity for innovative talent to meet and connect with potential award-winners and other experts across the sector at a largely social event with celebration at its heart.

‘We hope that longer-term bonds and ideally jobs will result from this.”
