Planetarium celebrates 50 years of Star Trek

By Robin Askew  Monday Jul 18, 2016

You may have noticed – how could you not? – that there’s a new Star Trek movie out this summer: the Simon Pegg co-written Star Trek Beyond.

But hardcore Trekkers have another cause to celebrate. It was 50 years ago this September (8 Sept 1966, to be precise) that America’s National Broadcasting Company aired the very first episode of Gene Roddenberry’s venerable creation.

To mark this momentous anniversary, Bristol Sunset Cinema is teaming up with local science-fiction/science fact podcast The Cosmic Shed to put on two special screenings at the Bristol Planetarium.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

On September 9, they’re showing the director’s cut of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, followed by an audience Q&A and live recording of the Cosmic Shed podcast with special guest Prof. Bruce Drinkwater who will be demonstrating – woah! –  a “real life tractor beam.” Go here for our listing and review.

A week later on September 16, they’re screening Star Trek: First Contact. Once again, this will be followed by an audience Q&A and live recording of another episode of the Cosmic Shed. This time, the special guest will be Dr. Erik Stengler, an astrophysicist who specialises in time travel at the movies. How do you land that kind of cool job, eh? Go here for our listing and review.

As usual with Bristol Bad Film Club/Bristol Sunset Cinema screenings, these are not commercial events. All profits go to suitable deserving causes. So in keeping with Roddenberry’s vision of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations, all that nerd loot will be funnelled to local charities that fight social prejudice – LGBT Bristol and SARI.
