The First Purge
Prequel to the first Purge flick, revealing how all crime came to be legalised for one night only
If you’re a football-hating sun-dodger, now is most definitely the time to plan a visit to the cinema. Not only are the multiplexes mostly empty, but your chances of being stuck in the vicinity of someone consuming a three-course meal, making a lengthy phone call or surrounded by annoying children is dramatically reduced.
There’s a decidedly mixed bag of new releases this week, ranging from horror prequel The First Purge to imaginative low-budget sci-fi The Endless. There are also documentaries about Whitney Houston (Whitney) and – should you be eager for more on the subject – Brexit (Postcards from the 48%). In addition, previews of the next blockbuster, Skyscraper, arrive on Thursday in both 2D and 3D.
Bristol Pride’s Queer Vision concludes this week with a strong programme that includes a preview of The Miseducation of Cameron Post (opening nationwide in August).
If your appetite for music on screen has been whetted by the recent Doc’n Roll film festival, watch out for the 50th anniversary screenings of Yellow Submarine, the local premiere of The Doom Doc with live bands, Muse’s Drones tour concert film and the final al fresco BP Big Screens offering live from the Royal Opera House – Don Giovanni.
