Migrant films screened at Encounters

By Robin Askew  Monday Sep 14, 2015

Among the packed programmes at the 21st Encounters short film and animation festival is a timely selection entitled Strangers in a Strange Land. These six provocative shorts explore issues of cultural identity, displacement and the return of the far right. Here’s the line-up in full:

Aissa

A drama about a Congolese illegal immigrant in France. The authorities believe her to be over 18, so they give her a physical examination.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Over

A crime scene recorded in nine wide shots. But what’s actually happened: a murder, a hit-and-run or an accident?

Listen

A woman in a burqua arrives at a Copenhagen police station to file a complaint against her abusive husband. But the translator assigned to her seems unwilling to convey the real meaning of her words.

S

A frank, London-set drama about the relationship between an Eastern European sex worker and her pimp.

Shipwreck

An Eritrean survivor of a 2013 sinking that claimed the lives of more than 360 refugees returns to the Italian island of Lampedusa to recall his nightmarish experience in a graveyard of shipwrecks.

Patriot

An 11-year-old girl from a small English rural community meets a boy from the forbidden part of town against the backdrop of simmering racial tensions.

The Strangers in a Strange Land programme, certificate 15, screens on Thursday September 17 at 10am at the Watershed. Encounters runs from Tuesday 15-Sunday 20 September. Go here for more on the festival.
