Film That Bought the Cube screenings revealed
Beardyman, Jem Cohen, Mark Cousins, The Easton Cowboys, Fat Paul, Stuart Home, Katie + Kim’s Kitchen, Andrew Kotting, Chris Petit, Portishead, Nic Roeg, Rasha Shaheen, Peter Strickland, Dudley Sutton, Tony Grisoni & Oona Grimes . . . That’s an impressive and eclectic list. What’s more, it’s just a pretty random extract. You can find the full roll of honour here. What unites these luminaries is that they all answered the call when Bristol’s venerable Cube Cinema set out to make its own movie as part of a successful £185,000 fund-raising campaign to buy the building.
Each contributor came up with a 60 second clip and these were all spliced together to become the kaleidoscopic, 77-minute, The Film That Buys the Cinema. This received its premiere last October at the London Film Festival. “An insistent stream of lurid, poetic and bizarre otherworldly episodes are brought into compelling hard collision here, like an old underground VHS mixtape or an exceedingly choice – and unpredictable – weave of unlikely YouTube hits,” enthused the BFI.
Now Bristolians have two opportunities to see the film at – where else? – the Cube. Each screening has a live musical curtain raiser from a local artist whose work is included. On 16 April, there’s Auto Bitch (aka Katie + Kim). Tickets available here. On 17 April, you can see The Dagger Brothers. Tickets available here. As usual, all proceeds go towards ensuring the upkeep and continuing function of the Cube. If you want to contribute further, limited edition FTBTC art packages are available here.
