Dave McKean brings new film to Bristol
Best known for his collaborations with Nail Gaiman on Mirrormask and the Sandman comic book series, artist and filmmaker Dave McKean strikes out on his own with the Devon-set Luna, which received its European premiere at the recent Raindance film festival. Now he’s taking the film on the road, stopping off at the Watershed on November 10.
A typically ambitious blend of live action and animation, Luna is the story of a couple (Ben Daniels, Dervla Kirwan) who recently lost their newborn child. To help cope with their loss, they visit an old friend and his younger girlfriend at the couple’s rambling, isolated seaside clifftop home. The emotional reunion sparks a series of dreams, visions and fantasies, which McKean conjures up using a variety of animation techniques.
Reviews have been fairly mixed, but the Hollywood Reporter championed the film, remarking that, “there’s more imagination and risk-taking here in any given five minutes of the running time than in whole films with budgets a hundred times bigger.”
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Tom Abba from UWE. For more information and to book, go here
