Bristol cinema ranked among world’s best
A cinema in our city famed not only for its film programme but also for its inclusive toilets has received another accolade.
Time Out has placed the Watershed on list of the 100 greatest cinemas in the world which includes picture houses in New York, Jaipur and Seoul.
The ranking is described as “a definitive list of perfect picture houses, cosy indies and cult cinemas” and was curated by the magazine’s global film editor Phil de Semlyen who consulted experts around the world.
Much-loved as a cultural hub overlooking the Floating Harbour, the Watershed has built a reputation for championing independent film, hosting festivals and supporting emerging talent – as well as its fully inclusive, gender-neutral toilets toilets.

De Semlyen said there has “never been a better – or more important – time to celebrate cinemas.”
“They’re the places we go to dream, focal points of our communities and an all-round great escape – and they’re faced with unprecedented challenges. But there’s reasons for optimism: the Letterboxd generation is embracing the big-screen experience like never before, with Oscar-winning filmmakers like Ryan Coogler, Christopher Nolan and Chloé Zhao its tireless champions.
“In that spirit, we’ve pointed a spotlight at a hundred magnificent movie palaces from across the globe that all movie lovers should know about – and hopefully visit.”
